How KS Photo Converter Works

A plain-language look at how a photo becomes a bead pattern

The Hybrid 2 Color Matching System

This is how KS Photo Converter matches colors. Color data published by bead manufacturers is a common starting point, but it is made up of idealized values that describe what a bead is supposed to look like, not what it actually looks like in your hand. Krazy Stitcher takes a fundamentally different approach with its proprietary Hybrid 2 system.

Instead of trusting manufacturer data alone, KS combines computer vision with expert human verification. The system extracts actual color values from real product photographs using k-means clustering, then cross-references those extracted colors with manufacturer specifications. Each match is reviewed and verified by hand before it enters the database. The result: 285 DMC thread colors matched to 474 Miyuki Delica bead colors with zero "Poor" matches and 94% rated "Excellent" or "Good."

This hybrid approach covers multiple brand pairs across all 9 supported bead brands, giving you cross-brand color matching across all 9 supported bead brands.

For a detailed technical breakdown of how the Hybrid 2 system works, including methodology comparisons and accuracy metrics, see our in-depth technical document.

The Problem with Other Converters

The simplest way to convert a photo is this: look at each pixel in your image, compares it to the available bead colors, and picks whichever one is mathematically closest. This "nearest color" approach sounds reasonable, but in practice it produces flat, washed-out patterns that lose the depth and character of your original photo. Skin tones turn muddy, gradients become blocky bands of color, and subtle shading disappears entirely.

To make matters worse, most tools give you no control over how the image is processed before conversion. You cannot adjust brightness to compensate for a dark photo, boost saturation to preserve vivid colors, or fine-tune contrast to bring out details. What you upload is what you get — and the result is rarely what you hoped for.

You Choose How Your Pattern Gets Made

KS Photo Converter doesn't force you into a single workflow. At every step, you decide how your image gets converted — and you can save your preferred settings to reuse on future projects, so you never have to dial everything in from scratch twice.

Direct Color Matching

Simple and fast. Maps each pixel to the nearest bead color in your chosen palette. Best for graphics, logos, and images with solid, flat colors where crisp edges matter more than smooth shading.

Floyd-Steinberg Dithering

Spreads color differences across neighboring pixels to create smooth gradients and realistic shading. When one pixel can't be matched perfectly, the "leftover" color gets blended into its neighbors. Best for photographs, portraits, and any image with subtle tonal changes.

K-Means Quantization

Intelligently groups similar colors in your image and finds the optimal bead palette to represent them. Reduces the total color count while preserving the image's overall character. Best when you want a clean, cohesive pattern with fewer bead colors to buy.

Beyond the algorithm choice, you control the bead brand and palette, the grid size (how many beads wide and tall), the maximum number of colors, and image adjustments (brightness, contrast, saturation) — all before you click Convert. Once you find settings that work well for your style of project, save them as a preset and load them instantly next time.

Image Controls That Matter

Before you convert, Krazy Stitcher lets you fine-tune your image with brightness, contrast, and saturation sliders. Brighten a dark photo, boost saturation to keep colors vivid after conversion, or increase contrast to bring out detail in flat images. These simple adjustments can dramatically improve your final pattern — and no other free beading tool offers them.

Lab-Accurate Color Science

When Krazy Stitcher compares your image colors to bead colors, it does not use simple RGB distance like most software. Instead, it uses the CIE LAB color space and Delta-E perceptual distance formula — the same method used by professional color laboratories, paint manufacturers, and printing houses to measure color accuracy.

Why does this matter? RGB distance can say two colors are "close" even when they look obviously different to your eye, especially in blues and greens. LAB color space is designed to match the way humans actually perceive color, so when KS picks the "closest" bead color, it genuinely is the one that looks closest — not just the one with the nearest numbers. The result is patterns with noticeably better color fidelity.
